Ok, I really MEANT TO take pics yesterday but I ran out of time. Spent most of my limited time zeroing my four rifles on the 100yd range. Made it to the 600 yard range where the party was but didn't have enough time before I had to leave for a social engagement.

We had I think 12 ODT'ers show up? I got a chance to at least say hello to most of 'em but conversation isn't always easy with hearing protection and rifles going off.

So here's my range report.

First, I'd like to say the range safety on the 100yd lane was a really cool guy. Very knowledgeable and personable. I told him about ODT and invited him to come take a gander.

My first rifle out of the case was my Swiss 1896/11. Sights were off. And I mean OFF. Had to aim low and right to get the bullets where they needed to be. But once I learned where she shot she stacked 'em pretty nicely. Not bad for a rifle built in 1903 and re-arsenaled around 1912 or so.

The shots in the white were my zeroing shots. This rifle has a leaf type rear sight and if only I could put a peep sight on her! Funny thing, the lowest setting on the rear sight is 300 meters. I guess the Swiss back then didn't want the enemy any closer than that. I have two Swiss K31's and both their iron sights are dead nuts on at 100yds, so this one surprised me.

Ok, speaking of the Swiss K31, this rifle is a first year production gun. 1933 I think? I added a clamp on scope mount and clamp on muzzle brake. This is what a Swiss rifle is capable of when you have a cheap scope on it. Redfield Revenge.

Did I mention how much I love Swiss rifles? They really make a novice shooter like me look good.

Okay, next in line was my 1944 CMP Garand. I got this gun in July and yesterday was the first time I shot it. Yeah, I know. But she shoot true once I got the sights figured out. Love the peep sights on the Garand! All the shots outside the black were spotting rounds for sight adjustment.

The youngest gun yesterday was my Molot VEPR. She has a 23" barrel and a POSP scope I got from Alleycat. I shot both Silvertip surplus and some surplus match ammo from Russia. The trigger on this gun leaves a lot to be desired but still a great gun. I added a muzzle brake. I was parting 10thMountain's hair on the 600yd range with the muzzle blast. I had to get him back, he kept hitting me with the brass from his AR. That'll teach him to sit next to me!

Okay, will have to make another post, I've run out of memory.

Wow, what a great time today! Wish I could have stayed longer!

Had a GREAT time! Shot my first Mosin PU (thanks 10th Mountain!) and got to meet some ODT members in person for the first time!

We need to do this at least quarterly! Nothing like ODT folks stretching their legs at the range!

Nice turnout. I just can't get over what a great facility CMP is!

Looking forward to joining you guys next time for sure

Here's the VEPR on the 100 yard line. Not a Swiss rifle but a lot of fun nonetheless. The first pic is Silvertip surplus and second is the match ammo.

I think I just need more time behind the gun. I think she's got real potential!

Okay, next it was off to the 600 yard line. Apparently that was where the ODT party was!

But gotta tell ya, as nice as the RO was at the 100yd lane, the RO at the 600yd range was a crotchety ol' cuss. I only had a short amount of time to shoot before having to get back to the 'Creek so I asked nice for him to raise the 600yd target. He said he was sorry but that he needed me to shoot the 200yd target to prove my skills.

I gotta say I'm a pretty easy-going kinda guy and the last time I shot there was back in July and no one questioned my marksmanship skills. The rush for time was the biggest thing I guess. But it kinda got under my crawl. But he's the guy in charge so I guess I have to dance when he says dance. I get it though, you shoot the target system and break it, it gets expensive.

So I produced my K31 and shot a couple of mags. and then had to chase him down for permission.

So I guess he thought it was okay so he raised the 600yd target. Asks me what my dope is for the scope and I told him I was going to be using the stadia hold-over lines built into the Redfield scope.

So RO stands behind me while I get ready to shoot. I guess if I missed the target he would bust me back down to 200 yards? I dunno, but the pressure was on!

I got lucky using the hold-over lines in the Redfield. First shot was center low. I turned around and looked at the RO and he scuffled off. I should have told him to put that shot in his pipe and smoke it but I didn't want to get kicked off of the range. But yeah, I got lucky with that first shot.

I had to aim above the target circle in the white part of the target to try to walk the rounds in. Never adjusted my scope. Just didn't have time.

Okay, up next at 600 is the VEPR.

Okay, I'm sure you're getting tired of the Hayata range report so here's the last pics of the Molot VEPR on the 600 yard line.

So I didn't know where to aim for 600 yards but my cross-hairs on the K31 were about mid-way between the lane numbers. I figured the 7.5x55mm Swiss round and the 7.62x54R round were similar ballistically-speaking so I put the POSP cross-hairs midway on the lane number.

Success! And as it turns out, the POSP scope also has stadia lines for hold-over and all I had to do was use the third one down from my 100yd zero. It was shooting slightly right so I had to add some Kentucky windage. I wish I had time to test out the Silvertips at 600yd but only used the Match ammo.

Okay, talk about luck! If you look closely at the bull you'll see two holes. 10thMountain can confirm the two shots.

Anyway, what a great time yesterday!

Thanks to Geaux for setting it up and thanks to all who came out. We need to do this like every three months or something.

CMP Talladega really is a world-class shooting experience!
