Prostate Cancer

I am 71, have had nearly a dozen fraternity brothers with prostate cancer. Only one has passed away, he was very macho, no testing, no doctor is going to finger me, etc, etc. his cancer was found too late, spread to bones, left him whimpering like an 8 year old girl. Others who have had the DaVinci robot surgery have done very well, most with no radiation or chemo. My best friend, Vietnam Vet, Agent orange exposure, had removal and is now on hormone, Lupron, treatment, he is 10 years or so post surgery. Only one brother opted for radiation seed implants, no surgery, he is doing OK 8 years later.

If it was me....I would do DaVinci or Green Laser which I think may be the same as the Cyber Knife. I know one guy who did Green Laser and he was very satisfied with results.

Knowledge is POWER, get as many opinions as you want, get all the info you can gather, what you are doing here is good....understanding that none of us are doctors.
Ask the doctors what they would do for themselves, their brother, uncle or father.

PSA over 6. 12 sample biopsy. One sample came back positive. I chose surveillance. That was 2 years ago. Biopsy last month showed no cancer but one sample had a positive marker. I am 61. Continuing surveillance.

Active surveillance is absolutely a very real option. The 12 core biopsy is standard.

I have Stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer. PSA was 42. I had my first biopsy in 2007, in the docs office and twelve samples. A few years later and after the PSA was rising, picked another Urologist and he took another biopsy in the hospital and checked 18 samples, and the bladder. I also had three different locations check the biopsy and each stated it was the most aggressive type. I had seeds, External beam radiation, and the Lupron, and hormone treatments. I am currently in the 5th month of the 8th year since diagnosed. We studied, and continued to do so, about ways to treat. The best thing we have done is notified our church and prayers happen all the time. Next thing is, totaling changing my diet. We started juicing almost daily. Then changed the eating. Research statements concerning this change shows diet is critical. I am 67 and still around.
Very thankful, but readying myself to go when its time. Last PSA was 3 wks ago, 0.08!!!!!
Willing to talk through this with others if needed.

BIL (mid-50s) went to Houston to have prostate surgery. Went well.

Decided against lasering or beads. In hospital one week, then flew back.. Back to work, feels well.

Did see about four different surgeons. Went with a comprehensive medical team where all the drs confired with him at once, and everybody was on same page before any procedure.

If there is a re-occurrence, he still has all his options. Had he gone the nuclear way, he was told scarring at the site would limit what effective treatment he could have later in life.

All this because he went two years between prostate exams. Early detection is the single most element in successful treatment of prostate cancer - it is a very treatable situation.

Hang in there, buddy!

You are the same age as me. My best advice is take the advice you get here with a pince of salt however good intentioned. Satisfy yourself you have an excellent specialist and take his/her advice and follow it to the letter, that will give you the best chance of beating it. Mind you many people our age live to a ripe old age and fall off the twig long before the prostate cancer gets them. I wish you the best of luck and a full and complete recovery.

IF you are a veteran and served in the military and was possibly exposed to agent orange, you should contact the VA through the Georgia Department of Veteran Services and make a claim to the Veterans Administration for compensation. The GDVF will submit the appropriate forms to the VA on your behalf. Agent orange has been linked to excellerating the effect of prostate cancer. Do it!

That is what I did and am receiving 100 % for the last two years. Be aware that it is usually not a permanent rating. The VA stated once the treatments are finished and you have no more Cancer they can reduce the rating of 100%. I know of at least two people who were reduced to 90% but get the disability rating of 70% for pay purposes.
I had to be questioned again in Feb about the Cancer at the VA. I submitted a form from the VA to my Oncologist that wanted to know function and many other questions concerning the urological problems. I submitted it and received the verdict in the mail two days ago. They extended my 100% disability until September and will re evaluate again at that time. The form I submitted upped my disability payment a couple of hundred dollars. That was a surprise
