Places to hunt other than WMA- non resident

My brother is in town for this weekend and I am trying to find a place for us to hunt the most elusive game, squirrels. I am not really looking forward to buying a non resident WMA stamp for $73 just to go hunt for 3 days.

Any ideas?

Is it sq. Season already? No wma permit is needed for national forest land outside wmas.

Thanks for the response! It will be squirrel season this Friday and can't wait.

Any thing special I should be concerned with when hunting on national forest land? Need to check in/out? Besides the normal regulations (firing within 50 yards of a road, etc....)

You probably won't see anyone. The ne hunting regulation booklet is out.

Make sure to check to see if lead shot is allowed on a particular tract of Federal land if you decide to go. Call in advance to verify. Bond Swamp NWR, for instance, requires steel shot only in shotguns for small game.
