Last week I sighted in a parts AR that I recently built with a new dirt cheap upper, new 16” dirt cheap pencil barrel, and new dirt cheap clearance ALG 13” handguard. The red dot is lining up waaay over on the left, above the left edge of the front end picatinny rail on the handguard. It’s a fun little rifle I’d like to keep it as is but get it shooting straight.

What have I done? Bought an upper that needs lapping? Bent the pencil barrel? What should I do? Will lapping be a waste of time?

Any advice appreciated. Stay well!

Hard to tell without seeing it in person. Do the rails on the upper receiver look straight? Do you have another red dot you can mount on it and see if the problem still exists?

Well shucks maybe those ALG Defense rails were on clearance because they are twisted or drilled wrong. I’ll try another one.

Best bet would be to bore sight it with a laser "bullet". You can get them at academy for $10-$30. That way youd atleast know how much the red dot was off. I've also had red dots literally move with every shot because the rail was moving on the receiver.
