Old chest identify

I received an old chest and was wondering if anyone knows something about these
It has an “American railway express” label on the side and the old lock made by excelsior lock works Canada, and. I’m sure the 70s lining ain’t original and it’s value lowered a lot with condition

Pretty common. There was a time when folks wanted these to use as coffee tables with a larger glass top. Value maybe $275.

That's an old Steamer Trunk. Pretty common, but that is one of the better ones that I've seen condition wise.

These things must get really bad if this ones a better example, they must have took a beating

I was in the antiques business for 35 years and based on the pictures I would say it was a early 20th century trunk that had a complete restoration in the early 1960's. It looks like the original fabric was removed and the wood was refinished. The drawer lining reminds he of Haight Ashbury Psycodelic from flower child era. JMO

My wife has a large one somewhat like that one. Hers has leather straps that buckled the top shut. She said she had it as a child.
