That is correct. If you have a will, it goes to who you designate. IF you don't it goes to whoever the state designates. It doesn't just automatically go to the ATF. And yes a rightful heir gets it on a free transfer.

That person does have to fill out the paperwork and submit it to the ATF though right? Thats the way I understood it.

k cool. Just wanted to make sure. I put those forms in with my will to make it easy on my family when I croke. Dont want them wondering what forms to fill out!

I went with the trust for the ability for trustees can possess the item. My father and my brother are on it, so that I can hand it to them and not worry about anything. Magpul grips are a great place to store a copy of the Form 4 for the items for those LEO's that aren't familiar with the process.
