My buddy has a 48V Yamaha Cart that is ailing.. When he drives about 5' it stops. He can disconnect the battery, the sylonid clicks and it will run another 5'.

That's why he's so good. Always checks the simplest things first.
So you didn't even check the gas did you?
Sounds like a bad circuit breaker.
Those carts have a bunch of battery cables and connections. Either can develop high resistance and cause problems as well.
Lots of time with a multimeter checking for voltage drops may be needed if it isn't a bad over current device.

Loose connections, bad cables. Tighten all the connections 1st.
