I looked over a article telling of the native very large species of walleye no where else but in Virginia. The New River is known for excellent Musky fishing. Not only Re the musky big but so are these native giant Walleye. The New River is one the oldest Rivers around. It also host these native walleye that so far have tipped the scales out at just over 22 lbs.. The wildlife fish specialist in charge of seeing this species thrive by harvesting eggs and raising them to be released after they reach a certain size said ( from what we can see these walleye have the potential to grow to 25 plus lbs.
I am planning a trip very soon. It's an hour and a half drive. Dragging my boat and sleeping in the back of my truck. Hurray for camper shells.
I use to fish for walleye all the time in Tom Steed lake in Ok. They were stocked and the population thrived. My personal best is 9lb. 8 ounces. I should be able to decimate that personal record with these Virginia only species of fish.

Take pictures, I haven't been up that way in years despite the fact that I have lots of family there (or more likely because of it) and would love to go back one day before it's all ruined.

Wow. How old do ya figure a 20lb walleye is?
I don't know but he has got to be old and wise. Apparently it didn't go into detail about grouth cycles. It did however post pics of a teenage with a 18 pounder and a real old pic of an older guy holding up the record 22 and change record. I find real odd that not a lot has been published about this fish. I cross over the New River everytime I come back to Atlanta. I am licking my chopps to get on the river. It's always so clearish green. Beautiful river. It always has campers right under the big bridge that crosses over it.
