It's a type of grasshopper.

They are grasshopper pests that can get to be 3 1/2 inches in length and they eat a LOT!

Ah yes, I remember them well in S Fla but never knew what they were called except Big Grasshoppers. During certain times of the year, they gathered in large numbers on barbed wire fences.

Apparently a good treatment for these is the same chemical used to kill fire ants. Acephate

They are real good fish bait. Use to catch them under lights in parking lots and gas stations take them to the creek and have fun and fill up a 5 gallon bucket up with red breast and butter cats. They stay on the hook very.good, didn't cost any thing but a couple of hours of bending over and dropping them in a gallon milk jug. Aha what good memories.....
