I'd like to rebarrel my 8mm mauser. It's in good shape aesthetically but given the cost of ammo I was thinking of changing the barrel out to a 308. Does anyone in the Atlanta area do this? I'd like to keep the appearance of the rifle as close as possible to the present shape.

I would not use a 308 based cartridge.....again.

I had my FN Commercial Mauser rebarreled to 7mm-08. It has a persistent feed problem with the rounds on the left side of the magazine. The gunsmith seemed to think it was okay, but it is not. I believe a 30.06 or Mauser based cartridge will be more likely to function smoothly. The 308 is not tapered enough to feed without some type of modification. Of course, anything can be made to work, but it may cost more to get it right.

If I were to do my project again, I would go with a 6mm Remington, 257 Robert’s, 6.5x57, 6.5 Sweed, 7x57, 270 Winchester, 284 Remington, or 30.06.

I would also send it to Douglass Barrels, McGowen, Shilen, or some other big barrel company for the barrel work, rather than use a local smith.

Here you go.
