Is a bill of sale REQUIRED or just recommended?
If recommended, is it more for the protection of the buyer or seller?

No bill of sale required, most people don't bother as it really doesn't provide any protection for anyone. Unless notarized they don't prove anything.

As long as you are both residents of GA and consenting adults you can just hand each other your stuff and drive away. No BOS or paperwork needed. Beyond that, you can make it as complicated as you want but legally you'd be fine without anything else.

Bill of sale is not required and many people are very very anti-BOS. If you decide you want one, you should run it by your trade partner first because if you show up with one and he is anti-BOS, he may walk.

A bill of sale is neither required nor recommended. Unless it is witnessed by a notary and notarized, it holds no weight in any court of law. It doesn't "protect" you or anyone from anything. If the guy with the pistol asks you to sign one, it's your call as to whether or not you want to trust that individual with your personal information. You, Mr. John P. Winklesmith, will have to make that decision for yourself.
