Thanks for that, but would hitting a repeater from 30317 zip be usable with 5W HTs?

Location is embedded in your phone. Forgive me if I used the wrong geek speak.
Guys, I may not be the most tech savy but unless you have a link explaining your theory, I believe you are incorrect. Other than triangulating cell towers, if your location services are OFF, they are OFF. Here's an article you may find useful.This. Turning location off does not turn it off for Google; it only turns it off for third party apps.
Correct. The goal would be to leave home the phone but still have a means of communication to home from up to 10 miles away. It seems like a repeater network would be necessary since point to point is only good for under two miles. And again I'll ask, if you think "Google" is tracking you all the time, then is your intent to simply never use your phone away from your house? If so that's fine, I'm just trying to understand the goal.

On iOS, it'll only populate Timeline with all your activity if you have Google Maps set to always collect location data (Settings > Google Maps > Location > Always).

Here's an enlightening chart on useful range vs advertised. https://www.buytwowayradios.com/blog/2016/12/gmrs_radio_range_chart.html

Now, I'm interested in using 5W GMRS handhelds for communications from the grocery store or wherever to my home. I will not be investing $100s on setting up a base station or personal repeater. My goal is to use two 5W GMRS handhelds and a GMRS repeater service for off-grid comms. I've been looking at https://nggmrs.org as they seem pretty close to my location (Decatur area). Would this work, or are 5W handhelds not going to cut it? Thanks.
But being nine miles to NGGMRS's nearest repeater (Forest Park), is that a non starter for a 5W HT? NGGMRS did have a repeater in Midtown only four miles from my house and would have been perfect, but it got shut down a few years ago due to site owner issues.Yes, they're good guys. You need three things: (1) a license, which doesn't require a test and covers your entire immediate family (spouse, parents, children, brothers & sisters); good radios which you can buy from Gary who runs NGGMRS; and learn the protocol for how to use the repeaters or how to use the radios simplex (radio to radio).
