Hornady 230gr XTP .45acp load

Can I get a second opinion on a load that I’m considering?

Hornady claims that a .45acp 230gr XTP over 6.4gr of CFE Pistol is approx 850fps out of a 5” barrel in a 1911. It’s my understanding that in a shorter barrel I should lose about 40fps per inch of barrel loss.

Loading for my 3” barreled S&W CS45, I should theoretically get approx 770fps out of the same load.

Does that sound about right? Hornady recommends staying above 700fps for reliable expansion.

It sounds right, but you need a chronograph to be sure. All barrels give slightly different velocities for a given load.

I would go right to 6.9 CFE and see how it shoots. Then, back off if you are not shooting well.
