Hopkins & Allen grip material?

Can any of you guys tell me what these grips are? What material? Gun was made about 1890...

Bakelite was available from water clear to black. It was also made in colors to simulate jewels (red, green blue violet, and many more).. Embedding flakes as seen in these grips was also done.
 
a little research shows you are probably correct. Thanks.

There were not many choices of of grip material at that time. Bakelite was new, and popular. The grips appear old and not recent manufacture. Had they looked or been documented to be from 1960 or later, it would be anyone's guess what they were. But at the time, not many choices.

Wonder if they cost more than ivory at the time?
