Homemade Bread

Ive got about 500 pounds of red and white wheat berries sealed in mylar and in plastic buckets for the same reason but I havnt got a clue how to make use of them. I figured that we would figure it out.

Start here. This used to be a small group catering to homeschoolers and preppers. The tough part is likely to be grinding enough wheat to make bread.

I have two bread machines and make loaves of Low Carb bread (Bob's Red Mill) every other month. I let the machine make the dough then bake it in a loaf pan as opposed to leaving it in the machine and getting a Texas brick.

Peasant bread
4 C Flour 2 Pks dry yeast
2 tsp salt 2 cups warm water
2 Tbsp sugar
Mix dry ingredients, mix in water, cover with damp cloth 1 hour.
Beat down dough, transfer to baking pan, allow to rise, bake 20 min
375

Pilot crackers
2cups flour 1 tbsp lard
3/4 cups water 1/4 tsp salt
Mix together, rest in refrigerator 10 min to allow lard to harden.
Rollout dough, 1/4 inch, use circle mold or cup to punch out to size.
Bake 15 min 400.

For when times get rough. Enjoy!

Unless you have a grinder it’s almost impossible to use wheat berries. I use a a hand grinder with stainless steel burrs and make flour then either use yeast to rise or unleavened to make loaves. It makes a very heavy bread so I slice it very thin.

I put up a lot of beans (pinto, northern, kidney) rice ,steel cut oats, salt , lard, honey etc.. in 2009 all of this stuff has a shelf life of about 30 years.
Its literally thousands of pounds of food that cost about $600.
The best insurance I ever bought !!
At the time I thought that I could do the mortar and pestel method if I had to with the wheat berries but right now I am looking at hand grinders and there seems to be one that is less than $50 and everyone is selling it under a different name. It looks as if you have to run the berries through 3 times.

I am not familiar with that model.I have a Retsel grinder with both stainless and stone burrs. It has a large wheel which makes grinding much easier, (it has a groove in the wheel to use with a belt driven motor) and I only have to grind my berries once. It is expensive but when you are looking at doing a lot of grinding and not having to worrying about it breaking it’s worth it.
