High school cars....

When I was 14, my older brother had a 1968 Roadrunner, 383 with 440 heads and an experimental cam. He let me borrow it one day, I took it out to a country road with a long, downhill straight road. It had 135 on the speedo, I buried it, must have been doing over 150. The striped line looked solid, the views to the side were blurred. Had one heck of a time getting is slowed down (I think to about 85) to make the 55 mph curve at the end. I had been driving by myself since I was 10 years old, rural Texas, no traffic. To date, have had 7 car wrecks, and 9 motorcycle wrecks, have slowed down some in my old age.

It started as a plain Jane 75 Camaro with an anemic 2 bbl 350.

It evolved into all kids of things, but in high school I was on a first name familiar basis with all the police in three counties and one army base.

Sold it just 11-12 years ago. As just a shell.

Someone here lucked into the motor!

It was a beautiful burgundy color

WoW!!! this is getting interesting!!!
So...2 full time jobs, cars paid for in cash, by teenagers...banks making loans to teenagers.....all this while in high school, or, in some cases in elementary school.....8,000 rpm out of a large block....floating at 140mph...or is it 160....I'm so overwhelmed, I really do not remember...I suppose nobody had to pay insurance.....mussel car...teen ager....paid for in cash.....I'm sure insurance was almost free....wonder where it is that you can do 160mph??? next thing....somebody will have had the Saturn 5 rocket booster strapped on the roof of their vega....filled up on regular....

Went to school, worked 48 hours on the clock and another 30-40 hours off the clock for cash. Gave most of it to my Mom to support her. First bank loan was at age 12 for a bedroom set and a snapper riding mower. Bought a VW at age 16 with a $1600? dollar bank loan. Had it professionally souped up for another $1200. Insurance was a major factor in owning a VW versus a muscle car. I was offered a 33000 mile 440 Barracuda for $1200 in 1980, jumped on it then had to back out, couldn't afford the insurance and my house payment.

Not a High School car for me but the one my wife wanted. Back in 2007 we were looking at a new Pontiac Solstice for my wife. When we got back home she told me the car she had wanted in High School was a 280ZX and she still wanted one. The restored brown one then became her daily driver for the next 7 years until it died in a T-bone accident. The black one is her current one.
