Gunsmith

I use Perma Blue from Birtchwood with great results. Just sand the barrel down to bare steel. The use very find wet dry paper to polish to very smooth surface. Use a a cotton ball soaked in Perma Blue evenly and let sit for 30 seconds and rinse with cold water. Then use 00 steel wool to remove the powder type residue that forms from the chemical reaction. Rinse and repeat until you get the desired depth of bluing.
That being said it's not a hot blue job which can run as much as 400 bucks but you can touch up as needed. Just clean the worn area with acetone and slop it on and rinse it off. It's a simple process. Surface smoothness and using acetone to clean before application is the key to a uniform result. Those old steel barrels and receivers take blueing really nice. They darken up quick. I think it's the lower carbon content that does it. That's my hypothesis anyway. I could very well be wrong on that.
