good scope magnification for hunting?

The biggest mistake people make with scopes is going to high on magnification. If you are not a good enough shot to kill a big game animal at 300 yards with a power setting 7, you are not a good enough shot to try a 300 yard shot at any power in the first place. The reason for this power range on a scope is for the LOWER end. You will be able to kill big game much more easily in Georgia with a 1.5 or 2 power setting than you will with a 4.5.

If you are on some kind of budget, one thing to consider is that you can usually get better glass for the money if you go with a 3-9x40. Clearer glass at lower magnification is at least as useful as lesser glass at higher magnification. They can make cheaper glass that looks good at noon, but falls apart at dusk when you need it most. I'd probably look at a Nikon Monarch in 2.5-10x40 for $300.
