When I worked at the port one of the hardest workers on our van was named Horace. He was about 73 then. Whenever anyone said something about * ,We gotta..." Horace would respond with " I ain't GOTTA do a damn thing but be black and die."
I always thought it was funny as hell even though other folks didn't know how to take it.
My mother in law used to say stay white, pay taxes and die. Lol

Yup. Comes from a Langston Hughes poem from the 40's or 50's. Common saying from Horace's generation. I grew up with a Godly old black woman who used to say the same thing. I was the only white kid she let laugh at it when she said it.
