The issue is the locking, yeah the guts are there but a lot of work to make it theft resistant, no locking bars etc. just basically a steel box.

Good deal for the person with the right needs. If the hasp is up to it, throw an Abus 37/80 on there and it'll be some work to get it open.

Not that im really trying to convince anyone lol, but I found several retro fit options for less than $300. No safe is crack proof, but you can make it enough of a pain in the ass that they give up.

But i have a crap ton of time on my hands right now, so i guess im just looking for projects...

At first I was with you op. The more I look at it though, the less of a deal I think it is. The amount of money and time you would have to put into it to actually make it a safe just doesn't seem to be worth it. Like rumrunner55 said, your security right now would be riding on how nice of a padlock you bought.
