Catfishing tips

Makerel has worked very well as a bait for many years for me. I live right off the middle oconee in Athens and the current is usually swift here. Largest I've pulled out if here was 5 pounds. Largest I've caught ever was 70 and that was using ocean gear in a lake out west.
My grandpa (age 99) still teases me a bit, says when he was a youngster they wouldn't even keep them if they were less than 12 inches.........between the eyes. I never believed him until I was a bit older and he showed me photos of him and my great uncle with a couple that were 6feet plus out of the Ohio River.

Here's a pic of a homemade bait holder similar to what I make with PVC pipe.
Here is a commercial one I've used in the past that pops open to load, closes under spring tension. It works too but homemade is far cheaper.
Thinking about this made me remember my dad also tried using plastic hair curler tubes with a swivel. I didn't like them personally, I thought the PVC approach was stronger and more durable over time but I think he got them at the dollar store so they were dirt cheap.
