When I worked for Ma Bell as a residence repairman, some yahoo was always cutting their buried drop wire.
Easy repair but most a-holes wouldn’t admit they’d done it and help out by showing where they’d whacked it. Spend half a day digging and searching.
Those were the ones that didn’t get ‘found’ for a few days.

I was building fence one time and was using a tractor mounted post driver. Punched a hole in a 36 inch natural gas line with a piece of 6 “ pipe. Learned my lesson real quick

If it was just your cable, not the neighborhood, just call the cable company and tell them you don't want it anymore. Save that 42 dollahs a month.

Now is as good a time as ever to cut the cable.

Except that's also most folks internet too.

They said another crew was going to come bury it. They never did. I just flopped it from side to side and just mowed around it.

Good friend of mine mowed over his not-buried cable line, but turned out it was fiber

Years ago I was laying out landscape timbers to form a bed. I drilled a couple of holes and used 10" landscape spikes to nail them down. Never once thought about phone lines. What are the odds that you line up a single hole in a timber and manage to drive a landscape spike into a buried phone line and sever it? For me the odds were good and I did it.
