Call before you dig

When I worked for Ma Bell as a residence repairman, some yahoo was always cutting their buried drop wire.
Easy repair but most a-holes wouldn’t admit they’d done it and help out by showing where they’d whacked it. Spend half a day digging and searching.
Those were the ones that didn’t get ‘found’ for a few days.
 
Years ago I was laying out landscape timbers to form a bed. I drilled a couple of holes and used 10" landscape spikes to nail them down. Never once thought about phone lines. What are the odds that you line up a single hole in a timber and manage to drive a landscape spike into a buried phone line and sever it? For me the odds were good and I did it.
