I've seen this 4+ ft black snake exploring all over my property for the last couple years. Never really paid much attention to it. I watched this snake eat a blue jay in my yard yesterday. Didn't see how the snake came upon the bird. By the time I got to it with my camera, the snake was starting to swallow the bird's head. Then it unhinged its jaw and took maybe a half hour to pull itself up over the bird and swallow it down. During the process it would wind itself around the bird, constricting with its body to make the bird smaller and easier to swallow. Finally the snake slowly moved off into the woods with a large bulge where the bird was.

It was probably one of these black racers (Coluber Constrictor) which frequent shrubs and trees hunting whatever prey they can catch or maybe a black king snake.

Black racer.
It may have also been an Indigo snake which is federally protected.

From your photos, it looks like its getting ready to molt and get a new skin.
