Best Way to Season Cast Iron?

I have not tried alternating grease and oils yet.. I'll add it to the list to try..

Nice, I'm trying it now.. There is a few different schools of thought on temp.. Pan Man says 225 w/ Crisco, Many folks, like Southernguy72, run with 400 degrees plus..

Too much heat and you can damage the iron. Not sure what that temp is.

Clean it, get it hot, spray pam. Cook in it, wash it out with hot water while it is still hot, throw on the stove, when dry.. spray pam. Been doing it this way for years, works great. You can also look at the Griswolds collectors pages. They even tell you how to built a tank to to soak it in to get it to bare metal.

The key is to open that metal up nice and wide so the grease gets in there...thus the heat/cool cycle. Also, I ALWAYS reheat mine on the stove or in the oven after cleaning it and then add a very thin layer of any kind of oil before stowing it away.

I know 500 degrees wont hurt it..Big temp changes can warp it though..

lodge has a website
love lodge..but there is allot of disagreement on thier seasoning tactics on the old interweb..

OG..Griswold is the ****.. I am always on the lookout for their pans!

I've used these instructions 3-4 times:

only I used flax seed oil (better chemistry)

Another hot seasoning method..I have tried flaxseed over and over wanting to believe the chemistry behind it.. Im bummed everytime..it either does not take or gets nice and slick then flakes over time..to brittle from my experience

Please Remember - After you re-season this pan NEVER wash it with soap, and NEVER NEVER put it in the dishwasher. Just rinse it out with hot to cold water and wipe dry. Re-oil with veggie oil by wiping it on with a paper towel.
