My 4 granddaughters have killed 9 deer with a youth model 243. Average shot distance about 90 yards. none of the deer killed ran over 20 yards. Rounds used are 90 grain Winchester.

around 1965 the Georgia Game Regulation Book list the .257 Roberts as not a legal round to use on Deer, there were several others also
one of the other rounds I remember on the list was the .30 Carbine; I remember Dad saying that was a piss poor round, said in the Korean winter the enemy was was bundled up so thick the round didn't do much good
Can't speak to the .30 carbine, I can only speculate about people using surplus hardball rounds.

But having taken many deer with the .257 Bob I can tell you it's a very effective round. It's essentially a necked down 7 mm Mauser that is soft recoiling but has heavier projectiles and greater case capacity than .243 or 7mm-08. Its also the only +P rifle cartridge. It fell out of favor when the .25-06 was introduced.
