If you want to sleep well at night and have outstanding home protection, get yourself one of these............

Firearms are tools. Just like you can't fix a whole car with a flathead screwdriver you cannot find a firearm that will excel at every task. Firearm choice is also highly subjective to your environment and expected needs.

In my opinion you need 4-5 firearms. You need a 22 cal pistol with a suppressor, a side arm (preferably a longslide that is .40 or greater 9mm if you are good with it), a rifle that accepts high capacity magazines (I like AR's in 5.56 for this here in the states), a long range bolt action rifle (dependent on your AO and the distances you expect), and a 12 guage shotgun.

With those you can mix and match depending on whatever situation or conditions require. If I had to leave the house with a backpack I would take the first 3.

The most important thing is physical fitness and training. If you aren't proficient with them or cant carry them just put a bow on them, leave them on your front porch and arm yourself with a rock.
