Anyone interested in becoming an independent insurance adjuster?

ive always wanted to be in the porn business, but being an independant insurance adjuster is probably about as close as i'd ever get to screwing for a living. smh

Bill

I am a Senior PM for one of the larger Disaster Recovery Firms. I have dozens of colleagues that have taken this road.

I will consider contacting you. I agree that one more "feather" would be beneficial, just know if I would have the spare time for the class, much less for the adjusting.

Great post !!

Here is a link to our store; the adjuster training schedule with prices and date information is listed: http://www.claimsadjusters411store.com/

I will post some more information this evening.

We will be having at least one class per month, with the possible exception of December. In January, we've got a training cruise where we are teaching advanced Xactimate and Introduction to property adjusting. Nice way to get a vacation that is also a business write off on taxes: http://www.claimsadjusters411store.com/trainingcruise.html

What makes being an adjuster worthwhile?

As a licensed adjuster, you can work as a self employed contractor with any number of Independent Adjusting firms across the U.S. Being a licensed adjuster makes you more attractive to companies like Geico, State Farm, etc. if you are looking to seek employment as a staff adjuster with one of these companies.
Property adjusting generally breaks down into two main areas: Daily Claims and Catastrophes.
Daily claims: these are normal claims that come in to your local area such as water damage/wind damage/etc.
CAT claims are when a catastrophe such as a hurricane or tornado breakout occurs and results in devastating damage, usually resulting in declared disaster areas. Serious money can be made during a CAT in a short amount of time. I/A firms sign up people and have stand by lists. In years past there have been adjusters who worked CAT claims for a couple of months and took the other 10 months to do whatever. Yes. In a good hurricane season the money can be that good.

We are greatly weather driven....when the weather is real nice, work slows as an adjuster. It cycles. When storms are there, you work like mad and put the money in the bank for the slow times.

If you are not a self motivated go-getter this might not be the line of work you are looking for. If you are looking to adjust in Georgia, you will need a Georgia Resident Adjuster license.

With the economy being what it is we are seeing many home builders and contractors get licenses to supplement their income until the market rebounds. This is a current trend.
Contractors/builders fit good because they already know construction basics. That's half the battle.

Do you have to have a construction background? No. I did some work as a teenager doing maintenance stuff. When I decided to get into this line of work I went to the public library and checked out a couple of books on basic construction and read them cover to cover.

Roofs: As independent adjusters you will have to access roofs to inspect and document damages.

Let's go over the classes we offer and how they benefit you.

Let's start with Introduction to Property Adjusting. This curriculum is written to give you a basic understanding of what to do when getting a property claim assignment. Once you complete this class you will be able to go to a property loss and scope the damages and collect all the information needed to write an accurate report and estimate.
A must for adjuster or an intend-to-be-adjuster.

I am a contractor...how can this class help me?

Well, you may already know everything. If so, rock on, bro. But you can learn what an adjuster is looking for when he comes to a loss. This will help you when you are called by a customer to look at some damages and give estimates. Many contractors will look at damage and say: call your insurance company. When the adjuster comes out he/she will be looking for the origin of the loss and whether it is long term or sudden and direct. The difference between a covered loss and one that is not is sometimes in how it is reported and explained.
Knowing what adjusters are looking for to justify the loss as a covered peril will help a contractor immensely. Having this understanding can be a tremendous asset.

Xactimate estimate writing software.

THE best property estimation platform in North America. Bar none. It is a professional grade software application that you purchase with a monthly subscription.
It uses local average pricing that is updated monthly for nearly every decent sized city in your area; it is SURPRISINGLY accurate.
It has an easy sketch mode; 3d viewing. It has built in help; if you are writing an estimate for say, water loss in a bedroom you can pull up the helper and it shows a picture of the room. You click on the part of the room where you want to replace a piece and it will tell you what it is named.
If you've got a piece of common sense, you can operate it.

To be a certified instructor in Xactimate you must go through the Xact company and invest a huge amount of time and resources to be certified. There are scammers all over the country selling themselves as “Xactimate Certified”. Our instructor is Officially licensed from xactimate to teach the course.

If you take the intro to property adjusting course and the Xactimate course, you will be be ready to hit the ground rolling.

I am a contractor. How can Xactimate help me? If you write estimates, this is the cat's meow. I know of roofing companies that hire people just to write roof estimates in Xactimate. Large contracting companies use Xact for their estimating. If you have a small business and hand write your estimates/quotes this could be the difference between looking like Barney Fife or Andy Griffith. It will help you manage costs and be more efficient.
NOTE: IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE XACTIMATE CLASS, YOU CAN GET A TRIAL VERSION TO PLAY WITH THAT IS GOOD FOR A LIMITED AMOUNT OF TIME--IF YOU TIME IT RIGHT, YOU CAN GET THE DEMO TO WORK ON IN THE CLASS. YOU WILL NEED AT LEAST A DEMO VERSION TO GET THE MOST OUT OF IT.

Texas All-Lines Adjuster Licensing

How can this help me? The Texas license is the most sought after license in the industry. It has reciprocity in 30+ states. What this means is this:

If you want to work in another state that recognizes the Texas license, you don't have to go through that states classroom education requirements. You give them your Texas license number, pay the license fee and BAM you are licensed in that state.

In a really big hurricane you may find yourself working from Florida all the way over to Texas. This years tornados opened up Ohio, W Virginia, Virginia and Maryland. You may work a couple dozen jobs in one state and then move to the next. The Texas license makes this easy to do.

Our pricing is extremely competitive compared to other Texas classes.

How can this benefit me? Opportunity x 30 = really good chance of success
Plus holding a Texas license opens doors elsewhere:
The Texas license is an ALL-LINES adjusting license. Property. AUTOMOBILES. BOATS.
Having the license could open the door to auto claims with any number of companies.

Trucking Liability Claims:

We also train adjusters to do on-scene off-scene trucking accident investigations. This is a whole world of difference from property adjusting but can be quite lucrative too. I won't go into this at the moment as we have no classes scheduled at this time. This is the type of work that you can do in addition to the normal property claims. Two revenue sources. They work well together.

The bottom line: Nothing in life is going to come to you. You have to go get it. We do not provide guaranteed jobs. What we provide is education, a licensing opportunity and the tools for you to have a chance to make some money doing something else. If you take the courses and sit on the couch, don't expect much in the way of results.

Currently these classes are being held in our Knoxville facility.

We have all three courses being offered in late October. Any or all classes would be a good investment for your future. Pricing will be going up on the Property class after October- so this one is the best deal before the price goes up.
We also have an education cruise planned in January. Check out the website for details.
If you are interested, sign up now. We take pay pal and major credit cards-if you don't want to use the online store, call in and set it up over the phone.

Oh, yea. As an independent adjuster, you are self employed. Your classes, travel, tools, computer and expenses are tax write offs.
The educational cruise in January is a mini vacation that you can write off your taxes.

If you don't think this will be for you and know someone who may benefit, pass the word.

I hope this gives a good overall explanation of what this is. I'll try to answer any questions that I can.

Billrube, I have a couple of serious questions. Why would I go out of state to train when those classes are available on-line or here in Ga.? Why doesn't Claims Adjusters 411 offer on-line classes? Do the Xactimate classes include a copy of Xactimate software or is that sold seperately? I know you can get a demo version, but, I thought it was worth asking.

As a side comment, I find it funny that these classes for the Texas License are held in Tennessee, but Tennessee doesn't reciprocate the Texas License.

I am very interested in looking at this as I found out a couple of weeks ago that my job will be ending sometime in the near future. With 40 years in commercial construction, this might be a good fit.

1. You don't have to use us for training. You can train sitting right in from of your computer with one of the on-line providers if you prefer. (But a lot of people do it to build relations--networking with people who are established in the adjusting world)
2. We don't offer on-line courses yet because it takes an act of congress (or similar government body) to meet all the guidelines for a 40 hour course. We are approved for a standard classroom course at the moment by the TDI.
3. Xactimate class will come with a huge book and disc with a demo version of xactimate on it and bunch of instructional material including videos. There is a monthly fee for the full blown version.
4. Tennessee does not require an adjusting license. Nothing to reciprocate. States that do not require an adjusting license can use Texas as their "home" state and have Resident Texas license instead of a non-resident.

Hope this helps.

I have wanted to do this for a while, however I need a guarantee I could stay in northern GA as I have school and a child to attend to. I have experience in "storm chasing" and working with adjusters on roofs and in homes.
