We had pecans and they seemed to kill just about everything under them. we rocked around them about 5 feet out from the trunk and then planted grass out from there. fescue for the shade. I like scotts blue drought tolerant and they have it at Amazon in big bags. You'll also need a bag of Miracle Grow top soil if you do it like me.

My steps, though I wouldn't do it on 0.5 acres...:
1. Get a garden fork. You'll use it for a bunch of stuff in life.
2. Use the fork to dig down and break up the ground about 6" deep. Just stab it in and wiggle it around back and forth to break up the dirt.
3. Use a shovel to remove your pecan "seasoned" dirt out of the area that you just broke up. Put it on a tarp or something close by so you can re-use it.
4. Sprinkle in about 3" of the Miracle grow dirt.
5. Sprinkle in your seeds, thick.
6. Use your garden fork to mix them into the dirt.
7. Cover with your orig. dirt.
8. Water well, then don't water for a day. Then water like you normally would until the grass comes up.
9. Don't mow it for at least a month. Yes, they'll get a little shaggy, but the babies need to grow good roots before you start hacking their heads off.

That's it. works well for me.
