A Tale of Two Crush Washers, or Two Crush Washers One Barrel, and other AR oddities

In your top photo, are we seeing a pretty massive casting void on the inside of the gas block? That's kind of what it looks like.

Nicely manicured thumbnail, by the way. I mean, you know, for a guy.

Either a casting void, or an area that was cracked and got carbon in it.

Not my thumbnail.

Don’t let your “friends” work on your stuff, and don’t monkey with stuff that you don’t know enough about, then blame it on a “friend”.

Guy wanted a new barrel extension installed on this barrel. Claimed a “friend” removed the barrel extension from his barrel to “polish” it, or some BS.

You can’t easily/readily/cost effectively install a new barrel extension on an AR barrel that already has a gas port. During manufacture, the barrel extension is installed, which then tells you where top dead center is. The gas port is THEN located, drilled, and reamed.

The odds of being able to install a new receiver extension, and have it index properly to the gas port, are pretty slim. If you were to shim the gas block to get it to time correctly, you would be messing with the headspace.
