45 Colt load for pistol and rifle

As the title says, looking for a “do everything” load in a pistol and rifle. 250LRNFP bullets preferred (already have some) so basically looking for a powder and charge. Using an RCBS Uniflow powder measurer so spherical may be best bet. A high volume powder is best for 45 Colt from what I read too. I’d like 750-800FPS in the pistol and ~1000fps in the rifle but currently won’t be chronoing anything.

Thoughts? Tips?

What kind of pistol? Some loads are 14k, some are 23k and some even higher.

I have a New Vaquero so I’m limited to tier 2 loads- here’s my data if it helps.

10.0gr Unique is max for tier 2 (23,000 psi) loads. Use 9.0-9.5gr for 255-275gr bullets

go to the Hodgdon site, they have loads for W231 and CFE Pistol that meets your criteria, both powders meter well.

Winchester 231 6.6 grains 810 FPS in pistol and 965 in rifle! I’ve always liked 231 and that’s load I like!

8.5 grains of Unique powder is pretty much the universal load for the 45 colt. You may have to drop to 8 for those velocities. What I’ve always run with bullets I cast.

If you do not mind a little soot - Red Dot is accurate, cheap, takes up a lot of room in the case, works great with lead.

Ive been loading 6.0 grains of TrailBoss under a 250 gr LRNFP for my Uberti Cattleman and my Remington New Model army with Kirst Konverter and it hits POA. However if you want to have some fun I recommend a compressed charge of 2f or 3f real Black Powder.
