I do very little CAD, there is so much stuff already available online. For simple patterns though or simple modifications to existing patterns I usually hop on TinkerCad. If I really need something complex, SolidWorks but I'm far from an expert. I have a brother-in-law that uses SolidWorks for a living, if I really need something difficult I just bribe him to make it for me.
 
I learned on fusion. Isn't there some issue with buying their license to use your drawings anywhere else but fusion now?

I don't think so, but I'm an amateur. They do a free version for home use and you can export in various formats.
