I’d be checking to see if the gas block has come loose first off.
If it was working with supers and now it’s not… something has changed/broken for sure.
Work the gas system front to back. Gas block alignment. Check carrier key tightness. Etc
This right here is the trick for sure.
Getting a weapon to eject and feed properly with/without a can is whatcha want. And unfortunately is something many will never attain - especially when shooting a menagerie of different ammo type/brands.
Right? Smooths it out for 223… causes it not to function with 300aac.
If your goal is to run one lower… it needs to use parts that work for both. A5 is a nice to have. Not a need to have.
I’ve had a 300AAC upper in a box for better part of a year with a similar issue.
8.5” Ballistic Advantage barrel. Standard gas block. PSA Premium BCG. Milspec CAR buffer and spring.
Mine struggles even with the can. 4 o’clock ejection is the best I can get and a short stroke malfunction...
Just drop some quarters in the end of the buffer tube to make up the 3/4” of difference between the A5 and CAR tube. This is an old trick for shortening the stroke on 9mm blowback PCC’s. Usually 6-7 needed for a PCC to make up the difference in OAL between .223 and 9mm.
Would work the same...
A good spring kit goes a long way… makes quite an improvement… but it’s not the same as a CGW pro package. The reset and take up improvements are great.
And a CGW pro package installed by them… is even better than a DIY job.
Interesting. And you’re sure you’ve got the gas dialed down to where it needs to be?
A malfunction like that is typically bolt outrunning the magazine. Or just an anemic magazine spring.
Unless there’s just something janky with the lower geometry.
You’re saying it jams for 1/2 the mag (top or bottom)? Or when it’s always feeding from the left or right side of the mag?
If the latter… probably an issue with the feedramp.
Good luck with it. cmshoot is pretty much all over the troubleshooting progression… less expensive to most.
1) test fit some different ammo just to rule that out
2) extractor tension/geometry
3) barrel/chamber
One (or more) of those will get it sorted.
Meh. A lightened BCG should be reserved for gamer guns only. Just an added failure point.
A hassle.. but much preferred over the typical over gassed barrels!. ;)
Lots of details missing here.
What kind of gas block? Already a low profile? Or have a pinned front sight post?
What handguard do you have? Some are super easy. Some require lots of trial and error using shins to get perfect alignment at the desired torque value.
It can be a 15 minute job…...
Because they are a mechanical part that can fail.
Some designs are better than others... but proper port sizing is the ideal fix.
Next would be mass and spring.
