Purchased a 1903A3 many years ago from the CMP and only put a couple hundred rounds through it before it found its way to the back of the safe.
My son has taken an interest in it and we have been shooting it recently. The original straight stock has cracked and started to fall apart. I'd...
Be careful with it.... Shooting Rock Island 1903's with a serial number below 285,507 is not recommended due to receiver heat treatment issues...

Got a photo of the side of the receiver below the bolt handle? The part showing the maker and year?
If it is a 1916, the bolt was change out for a later style one.
Looks like a possible peddlescheme, but there's something "odd" about it. Something not quite right, but can't put my finger on...
I did the exact same thing a few years ago.
I have a sporterized No. 1 Mk III sitting in my closet because I didn't notice the barrel had been cut...
Thought I was getting a great deal on a WWI vintage SMLE, that I would restore.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought modern ammo in a Garand was bad for the op rod (you risk bending it...), unless it was specifically loaded for the Garand.

"If the import mark is hard to find, then 200-275 locally, they seem to sell quickly here. If the import mark is plastered all over the area where the arsenal stamp is located, then 125-175 locally. Some...
This is my favorite.
A No. 1 Mk V trials rifle. About 20,000 were made in 1922-1924. Only about 2,000 were made in 1923, which mine is.
They were a precursor to the No. 4 Mk 1, by moving the rear sight back while leaving the snub nose type nose cap.
Photo of my 1909 No. 1 Mk I.
I acquired this as a sporterized rifle.
I had to scarf the rear portion of the original fore stock to front of a No. 1 Mk III fore stock (notice the different colors).
The unfinished pieces were acquired from EFD out of England and are the correct type for the Mk...
I'll agree with that. I might add that from the photo it appears to have a later style bolt, which would be consistent with the nose cap...
I'd be interested to see the date on the barrel.
