Linseed oil will work fine, lots of light coats, steel wool in between. Tung oil is about the same type of finish...same thing lots of light coats, rub it on, wipe it off let it dry. After you get the finish you want, wax it with some bee's wax furniture polish.
I put the ported gas plug in mine just to be sure, its cheap and easy insurance. I also got rid of any corrosive stuff that I had so I wouldn't mix it up and shoot it.
Question: I got the upgraded gas plug for my Garand, but I cant remember if I put it in or not. Can anyone of you experts tell if I have the new one in the bag, or the old one.
How do you tell them apart?
I have a shooter Garand that I got at an ODT swap meet. Didnt know a thing about Garands and got a gun that looked to be basically new...very high serial number. I dont think the last owner fired her at all. She shoots like a dream. I think I traded for her for something I had valued at...
When you say "hack the threads off," are you planning on taking a hack saw to it? That will most likely ruin any accuracy. Take it to a qualified smith to cut the threads off if thats what you want to do.
I think you should just leave it alone.
