I ran a box of Winchester Super X, 45 grain, LSWCHP, subsonic ammo yesterday at the range sighting in a new barrel setup.
1050 FPS and specifically made for varmint control. It was MUCH quieter than the five rounds of CCI MaxiMag I shot.
The groups were at 25 yards as I didn’t have time to...
.357 has a LOT of potential and isn't under powered at all. The problem is that most of the really effective loads aren't offered or are difficult to find in factory offerings.
I'll concur that that Rugers are better able to handle the heavy .44 loads vs the S&W's.
Sometimes it's worth getting back to the simpler things in life. I just spent two hours in the woods sitting on a bucket and talking to my son waiting for a stupid tree rat to wander by.
The tree rats weren't stupid today but it was Time. Well. Spent.
Yes and no. We're talking about medium and large game. Yeah you can use a .22 Mag to take down a moose if you care to stalk it enough to be able to put a shot behind the ear. Being able to place a .308 150 grain behind the shoulder from 100 yards might not do the trick whereas a 180 grain from...
It's a little more complicated than yes or no. The short answer is no, but you'll have to tailor your ammo accordingly. You'll also need to take into account shot placement and distance.
I'd say the Hornady ammo would be ok through your 686. It's loaded to SAAMI specs. I loaded up some Keith loads and ran them through my 686...well I shot six of them. I ran the rest through my rifle and my Model 28. :)
It's been a long time since I killed a deer with a shotgun but my last one was with a 20 gauge rifled slug at 60 yards. I took a neck shot and ended up cutting it's throat. :Note to self, never do that again.:
I'd stick with slugs and I'd make sure of where my shots are hitting. Are you...
Ha Ha. I think in my case they fear all the noise my son makes. I passed on a 125 yard shot at dusk this past fall with the .357. After my buddy told me about his I felt like a loser. ;)
A friend of mine dropped a doe at 125 yards last year with a .357 Marlin using the Hornady LeverRevolution ammo. He said she didn't eventake a step, just hit the ground.
I've done some hunting with mine but haven't had a deer considerate enough to hold still at what I feel is a comfortable...
