To me 2.5 to 3.5 year old does are the best table fare. I will shoot a doe over a young buck any day. However, we do not shoot does or bucks that do not have racks outside of the ears on food plots.
I would say it was a clean miss. Hair on entry, blood on exit is a fair rule of thumb. Either way a hit deer will almost always show subtle signs at least upon impact. Hornady hollow points should do the job just fine. Great that your getting your family out in the field where they belong! Good...
Best of luck. Finding a good hunting club that is affordable in GA is very difficult. Like Biker said, you are best off trying to find your own lease. 80 to 100 acres per hunter is a solid base line. I know a small club south of Athens that has 12 members on 120 acres! Ridiculous. Also, if they...
True story...back in the mid 80's we got out of school early the day before Thanksgiving so my best friend and I of course went hunting that afternoon. I had a homemade climber hung on a huge pine that overlooked an old clear cut bottom which was about 6 feet high in briers. I climber up about...
My oldest deer rifle is also a model 700. I am a huge fan of 700's. Rock freaking solid. Chambered .270 also with a Leupold scope. I trust that rifle 100%. Killed all kinds of stuff with all kinds of rounds over the years but for that rifle a few years ago I went back to factory Federal soft...
Grunt like a buck tending/chasing. Never used a doe or fawn bleat call. I do 4 to 5 low grunts about once every half hour. I use an old Eddie Salter grunt tube. I've tried others over the years with no success but that could be a fluke. I only do this during the rut. Has worked in Alabama and...
I simply don't think rattling is very productive here in the deep south. Generally our buck to doe ratios are such that there's enough ho-does for all. That being said, I am a huge believer in grunt calls during rut. Doesn't make sense I know. But I have called in more bucks with a grunt call in...
Another "bad" pic from my buddy in Alabama. This deer, especially for the deep south, is a stud. I hope that I get a chance to go down this year and try to get on him.
I hunted squirrels a lot as a youngster. Lot's of fun. As far as carrying them, you could buy a cheap fish stringer. Make a small cut in one of the back legs between the thigh bone and the tendon just like you would do on a deer that you were going to hang, and string them up to carry. Although...
My brother in law and sister are amateur wildlife photographers. They get some really nice pics. Here's one taken in the pasture behind their house in south Alabama. Some nice up and comers.
Also, check out this new small game arrow head. I met these good folks at the NABA Show in Reno last weekend. They are in California. I told them that I thought this would be a great product for the southeast being that the majority of small game hunters are here (at least I think). Good...
