Going back to the original question- if you wanted one caliber for the two (a pistol and rifle) I’d consider 5.7. FN or Ruger pistol and then an AR pattern rifle. I think for urban or suburban settings it would be a good combo.
I have bought a lot of stuff there when it's on sale, usually the REI branded stuff. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, they do have a good selection and some of the stuff is the same price everywhere so at least you get your dividend if you are a member.
being a member has a lot of perks...
not really survival but thought I'd ask here...
have a few fireplaces in the house. The main one in the living room is gas logs. Hate them, burns gas and really doesn't put out much of any heat. Looks nice. :) Now that it's not working, I'll have to call someone to take a look at it and see...
FYI those that have generators, make sure that you run them every couple of months and keep up with maintenance. A few friends work in that industry (larger commercial versions) are always amazed at the number of people that purchase generators and then they just sit for a few years out in the...
my understanding is that it will run most energy star refrigerators. Ours is pretty big (fridge/freezer) and no issues running it. I"m sure I could dig out the model and see what the actual specs are but i've run it on three different refrigerators and no issues with any of them. Fridge, lights...
for those looking for the basics, I bought a Harbor Freight Predator 2k last year. Quite a few friends run the Predator Inverter generators at the track every weekend and have good luck with them. Best bet is to run it for a few hours then change the oil to a very good quality synthetic, and...
the blackbird and edge were great if you were looking for light weight and are around or under 6'. The XLC is a bit nicer if you are taller, plan to go in the winter more, or just don't mind the extra weight.
I use mine for motorcycle camping in the woods. weight isn't a concern but the volume...
as someone else mentioned the MSR whisper light international. runs on pretty much any flammable liquid and is pretty quiet (well, compared to the XGK international). allows you to actually cook with it, adjust flame, turn it on and off, no smoke, etc.
you can get a variety of different size...
what do you want out of your hammock and what's your price range?
Eno hammocks are fine for casual use or day hiking. Sure you can throw a tarp over it and maybe figure out bug netting but it's designed for open/casual use. I have a couple of them (single and doubles) and use them for day...
good filter and especially for the price.
you can't filter viruses (without big $$$) so normally you have to kill the viruses and then filter if you are worried. Some filters have a charcoal element that removes the bad taste.
iodine is good for killing viruses, and then you can filter with...
not sure if you live in that area (Wolf Pen) but my first WFR class was at an outdoor lodge off Wolf Creek Road near Sunrise Grocery near Suches. This would have been around 1990? Not sure what the location was, but for whatever reason they were holding a WFR class there, and it was the closest...
Biggest issue I have with most kits is the contents going bad if you have any meds in them. Having a lot of cleaning and bandage supplies is a big thing, but also consider what your needs are for a kit. Are you building a kit for weekend camping and hiking trips? Lots of bandaids, second...
starting to put aside a bit more food stuff. I've got mylar bags, 5 gallon storage containers, sealers, etc.
What kind of bulk food is best from somewhere like Costco? I had assumed I would get some rice and beans (I have other meat/proteins already) but there's quite a variety of styles to...
I was in Miami Wednesday and Thursday just before the hurricane hit to help some folks I work with down there. I did find a few things useful, but some other things of my own. In no particular order:
water- someone mentioned the WaterBob thing that fits in your bath tub. Having 65-100 gallons...
I lost a few limbs and have a tree up in north GA that needs to be taken out (it's down). Talked to a few folks and looked around online. I ended up with the Echo CS590. I looked at Stihl Farmboss as well but had $150 credit at HD so the 590 came home with me. So far it's overkill for what I...
BTW I posted my Warbonnet on craigslist over the weekend. Had someone email me a few times but no word from them since. if anyone is interested let me know. this thread prompted me to get my setup just right (for me)...
I have the Warbonnet Blackbird DL and Edge rain fly. Fantastic lightweight combination and one of the best lightweight hammock camping setups available. Packs down to a super small size, ultra lightweight and very comfortable. I'm a side sleeper, and love sleeping in it. The dual layer bottom is...
