  2. Bad REI Experience

My wife and I shopped there for gear for a Scotland Rail/Trail vacation that we went on in June 2022. Bought a few things, socks, hiking shoes, stuff like that. Went on ebay, bought the back packs we saw there for 40% less than in the store. Still quality gear, but really pricey. I would contact...
  3. Propane/multifuel generators

I've got a Champion 9250. It has 50 Amp capacity to run an RV if necessary or to run the house. Bought a kit from Motor Snorkle to make it dual fuel (propane). Easy install with basic tools, installation instructions were easy to follow. Love my set-up.
  4. It it worth the cost and effort to Vacuum Seal Food?

I purchased a bag sealer the same time I bought the bags. Got them off Amazon. 4 mil thickness if I recall correctly. The bags are pretty cool. After you put your food in, add an oxygen absorber and seal it, when the opportunity requires you to open the bag, you don't open the sealed end, you...
  5. It it worth the cost and effort to Vacuum Seal Food?

For my long term storage I use mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. I make up my own buckets with various items inside. I seal beans (navy, great northern and pintos) rice, grits and oatmeal. In each bucket I put 40 rds of 5.56, 50 rds of .22lr and 50 rds of 9mm sealed in vacuum bags.

  8. Long Term Food Storage Buckets & Supplies on the cheap for the beginner

Check with the Publix close to your house. Call the bakery. They have 4 gallon icing buckets with lids they will give you for free. ( You'll have to wash them out) I buy bulk rice and beans, put them in quart mylar bags with ox sorbers and seal them with a mylar bag sealer. Should last 10-15 years.
  9. Texans got a good test or their prep or lack of.

One of the cool things I do for Christmas gifts to my family and some friends is to prepare 5 gallon buckets of essentials. Typically, these include beans (pinto, navy and great northern), dried soup mix, rice, oatmeal (old fashion), grits, bic lighters, fire starters, extended burn candles...
  10. SHTF!

My favorite, as labeled on the can was "Chicken and/or Turkey, boned". D.D., I'm sure you remember the orange nut cake or the chocolate nut cake. You had to learn how to eat those cakes. You saved your fruit cocktail, ate the fruit then poured the juice over the nutcake. If you tried to eat it...
  11. SHTF!

Hope you also sold him 25-30 bottles of fiber supplements, lots of protein...low fiber. 20 years in the Military, a lot of MREs. I'm old enough that at the start of my military career we were getting C-rations, a lot better than MREs in my opinion!
  12. Generator Thread ....When the power goes out...

Check out the dual fuel kits from Motor snorkel. Put one on my Champion 8750 and it's jam-up! Propane doesn't go bad like gasoline does. Yes, you lose a bit of generator efficiency but totally worth it.
  13. Generator Thread ....When the power goes out...

Have this very one. We use it at the Drag strip during the day to run the fridge, lights during the day in the coach. Night time we run the main generator. This one has a twistlock 30A plug. I made up a quad outlet box to run multiple 110v items. Love it, just wish I could make it siphon from a...
  14. Generator Thread ....When the power goes out...

Champion 8750 gasoline to which I added a propane conversion kit. Can supply 50A service to the house. As DD stated above, use Stabil ( I personally use the blue Marine grade ) but either is better than nothing. Make sure that you run the generator at least every other month and put a load on...
  15. New to the prepping game

Consider buying bulk rice and beans ( navy, pinto, great northern ), a bag sealer and some mylar bags. Do some research, some mylar bags come with ziplock seals that can be utilized for partial portions. Bags will also come with oxygen absorbers. I packed mine in 5 gallon buckets with 2 pounds...
  16. New to the prepping game

Even after you get your gear, make sure you know how to use it. Practice setting up your tent and tarp, cooking meals outdoors, fire starting ( in all weather conditions), water purification, safe and practical firearms use. Learn practical first aid, free classes are available. Look for water...
  17. New to the prepping game

Watch for a deal on Life straw water filters, both the individual personal ones and the larger one for group size needs. Go to Harbor freight and pick up a tarp, magnesium fire starters. Get some contractor grade trash bags, duct tape, several pairs of gloves. Dollar tree for emergency candles...
  18. 5 gallon lids?!

Are you attempting to seal 5 gallons of material in bulk? Just tossing my 2 cents worth in, I use food grade 5 gallon buckets but I fill them with 1qt. mylar bags filled with 2 pounds of my chosen material. Toss in a oxygen absorber, push out as much air as possible and seal with a mylar bag...
  19. What brand of long term food storage do you use?

Just a bit of advice. If you intend to eat MRE's for any extended period (more than 3 days), be sure to keep fiber supplements on hand. Just saying, from a guy that spent 20 plus years in the Military and has eaten his share of MRE's. Us older guys used to wish for the C rations that we got when...
  20. What brand of long term food storage do you use?

Bought a bag sealer and mylar bags with ziplock closures. Got bulk pintos, navy and great northern beans and bulk rice. Bags came with oxygen absorbers. Put 2 pounds in Qt. mylar bag and sealed. When you open a bag and use a pound, you can then reseal via the ziplock closure if you are going to...
