I don’t know enough about HAM to setup a vast network, so perhaps someone like yourself could lend some wisdom?
I have my radios programmed with various repeaters in areas I travel. GA, FL, AL, NC, TN, SC, and VA. But I mostly use GMRS & FRS frequencies.
I’d like to be able to hit repeaters...
Agreed, and well put. I personally use Comms for casual use (hunting, range days, off roading, road trips, etc). Realistically, if SHTF 99% of people won’t use comms like that or even know how. Unless you have a private network that’s setup to operate should the grid go down, it’s highly likely...
Update:
So I noticed a quirk with one of the radios I received (TidRadio H8 v2). When transmitting on FRS, I would get high pitched feedback. After some testing, I determined the battery had a bad ground.
I contacted TidRadio via email and they responded IMMEDIATELY. I’m talking less than 2...
Definitely like my Yaseu K5. I ran a little comparison of it verses the Tidradio H8 v2. So far I’ve found the H8 has better:
Power (10w vs 5w)
Range (I’m hitting repeaters I couldn’t before)
Frequency hopping
Battery (2500mAh vs 1600mAh)
TX/RX Clarity
Screen
Button feel
Wider UHF band for TX...

I ventured out into a new brand and I’m pleasantly surprised, so thought I’d throw the info on here.
TidRadio TD-H8 v2
Great features, max 10w output, outstanding range, Bluetooth programmable, 2500mAh battery, excellent screen, and easily synced with repeaters. Can be easily unlocked for...

9mm and 5.56 are most common, thus easier to "find" if need be. Running just one caliber has it's drawbacks and benefits.
Think about this. What if one of your guns goes down? Broken part, squib load, or some other reason? Well, what are you going to do with that ammo if your other gun is a...
What if you're not home and SHTF? Do you have gear to get you home? Or an alternate location that's closer?
Home is the safe bet, until it's not. Having a bugout kit prepared doesn't just include WW3 situations; what about if a massive storm hits? What if all the power is knocked out for days...
Also, for tracking team/ family, check these out below. It's good for situations like hunting, SHTF, hiking, offroading, skydiving, kayaking, etc. There's also a PC based program. You can track in real time, send rally points, map POIs, plot routes, send chat messages, videos and more...
It was 48% predicted that we should have a large one between 1990 and 2022. So there's still time! lol.
How are our systems more vulnerable? Back then they didn't even have shielding.
They happen every day; from .2 to 3.5. The Sun emits anywhere from 1 CME every 5 days, up to 3 CMEs in a day. They are mostly blocked by the Earth's magnetosphere. On occasion, we get hit with multiple ones that are so close that the trailing CME gets through and causes damage. The last one was...
The other components with circuitry can be protected easier. Unlike the panels that have to be in the open. It would take a massive EMP to wipe out even one solar panel array.
Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, battery banks, and all other components of an off-grid solar power system would not be affected by an EMP directly as they have no circuitry within. However, an EMP might damage the connecting wires through which the current flows, inverters, and such. There's E1...
Thanks for sharing.
I haven't had to pay for the use of any GMRS repeaters. Maybe I'm just not loading those in my radios, so I'll look into that. If you have anymore info, it is appreciated.
I was aware that HAM has great range, and I agree most people won't need that range if they are just...
