We are going to do both - keep our place here and get a place in Panama (rent out whichever we are not staying in as a short or mid-term rental). Keeps the options open.
This is another planned community in Panama (I have no affiliation with it) - it looks like they are strictly residential with security - "ours" will be more geared towards self sustainability as much as feasible.

As a comparison - I just found another 32 acres nearby - but in the hills (so the terrain is not flat and it is NOT on the Ocean) - it is WAY cheaper to purchase the land - The actual cost is about $99,000 ($3K per acre) - So could probably start with 5 families at $25k each for 1 acre lots (the...
Yes - though I do not know about Belize - from my understanding - construction materials are readily available in Panama - and labor is inexpensive. You can get almost anything there.
I had not heard of that - so looked it up! My ideas are much smaller in scale - and focus on ownership and self-sustainability. I am basically trying to create a nice ex-pat community to live and retire. Prospera looks lovely though.
Few countries around the world permit their residents to carry concealed firearms for self-defense. Among them, the United States, Czech Republic, Brazil, and Panama have more permissive regulations, making it easier for civilians to obtain these rights. On the other hand, Canada, the...
I appreciate your thoughts, and you bring up a valid point about the balance between preparedness and the prediction of dire outcomes that never materialize. It's true, the big crises like Y2K have come and gone without the apocalyptic consequences some anticipated. However, I see our form of...
I appreciate your concerns and understand that issues like corruption, safety, and political stability are significant when considering any investment or community-building endeavor in Latin America. It's crucial to recognize these risks, but also to highlight that Panama has unique qualities...
Of course, if we cannot get enough people interested, we could shoot for a smaller community (of just buy in the same area) - this was just some beautiful property I found that was available. PLUS - there is an additional 69 acres available adjacent to this property...
This is a property on the Ocean and allows for some initial development costs (such as breaking up into individual lots, roads, etc.). If you wanted a community away from the Ocean it could be MUCH cheaper, but at this point that is not of interest to me.
I know - I hate HOAs. As a (mostly) self-sustaining community, we would need to have some community projects, though - such as wells, water towers, solar "grid," roads, small farms, etc. - but no one would tell you how to cut your grass. Even if this project does not happen - we plan on...
I started a new thread about potentially forming a group of like-minded (i.e., Group 3 AND Group 4) individuals and families to develop a (mostly) self-sustaining community in the country of Panama...
No place is perfect - and I am an American Patriot - but... I also want to keep an eye out for back-ups. I have researched all over the world, and Panama won in my eyes for a few reasons -currenty is based on the US Dollar, allows residents to own guns, fairly stable government, reasonable...
It certainly is not for everyone. I first went with the Army in the early 1990s and then very recently. There are areas I would not want to live in either, but I found an area that I just fell in love with—quiet, close to the ocean, and reasonably priced land.
